reverse my metabolic age

The Handshake: How I Walked Out of an ER and Reversed My Metabolic Age by 10 Years

I am 61 years old. My metabolic age — how old my body actually functions, based on lab work and body composition, not the calendar — is 51.

This is the story of how I started to reverse my metabolic age — no medication, no extreme protocol, just two years of consistent change.

That’s a 10-year reversal. In two years. No weight-loss medication, no extreme protocol, no gym membership.

I’m not telling you that to impress you. I’m telling you because I want you to see what’s possible before I tell you where I actually started.

If you’re searching for how to lower metabolic age and want a real example instead of a theory, keep reading — this is exactly where I started.

The Waiting Room

At 59, I weighed 235 pounds. My blood pressure was uncontrolled. My cholesterol was medicated. I had chronic pain, breathing issues, and protein leaking into my urine — a sign my kidneys were under real stress.

I ended up in a hospital emergency room, waiting, during what felt like a heart attack scare. Twelve hours in, I was still waiting.

I looked around that room. Worn down. Unwell. Waiting, same as me. And I saw myself in every one of them.

That was my mirror. So I got up. I walked out. And I made a decision that this was not going to be my destiny.

Forty Years in the Making

Here’s what I didn’t say yet. That waiting room wasn’t really about one bad night. It was the endpoint of four decades of high-functioning addiction — alcohol, marijuana, always managed, always hidden behind results.

I was the first one up. The last one to leave the party. I wore my work output like a shield, so nobody looked too closely at what was underneath it.

The productivity shield worked on almost everyone. It never worked on the people who loved me. They saw it. I just wasn’t ready to.

Using What I Already Had

The turnaround wasn’t dramatic. I had a Bachelor of Science degree collecting dust, so I used it. I looked at my own health data the way a scientist looks at numbers — not the way a desperate person searches for a shortcut.

Over the next two years, I went further. I earned my credentials as a Certified Professional Trainer and a Certified Nutrition Specialist, so that what I was building would be grounded in something that actually produces results, not guesswork.

Where I Landed

Today, at 61, I weigh 170 pounds. On the scale, that’s 65 pounds lost. Underneath that number, it’s actually 75 pounds of fat lost and 10 pounds of lean muscle gained — which is exactly why the scale alone never tells the full story.

I’m off all cholesterol medication. My blood pressure is controlled. And recent metabolic testing puts my biological age at 51 — a 10-year reversal in two years.

I share those numbers as a documented case study of one. What worked in my body. Nothing more.

Before You Try Any of This

Everything on this site, and in the book I’m writing, reflects my personal protocols and my own lab results — what worked for me specifically. Before you duplicate any nutrition framework, calorie target, fasting window, or training approach you find here, please sit down with your own primary care physician first and establish your own medical baseline. My starting point was mine. Yours is different, and your doctor is the right person to help you find your safe entry point.

The Real Point

I’m not asking you to copy my life. I’m not asking you to become extreme or obsessive chasing a number on a scale.

I’m asking you to consider what’s possible when you give your body a better set of consistent signals — one honest upgrade at a time. That’s the whole spirit of what I’m building here.

If a 61-year-old with a 40-year addiction history and a hospital waiting room as his starting point can pull off a 10-year reversal, your future self has more room to move than you think.
